Sky High Entertainment for NASCAR

Sky High Entertainment for NASCAR

Beware of large falling objects from the sky during the NASCAR All-Star Race weekend set for May 20-22 at Texas Motor Speedway.

While the majority of adrenaline-pumped, all-star daredevils will be on track competing for the $1 million payday in the NASCAR All-Star Race, The “Rocketman” Valencia and Great American High Dive Show will give them a run for their money as the featured entertainment acts for the weekend.

“Rocketman” Valencia is a human cannonball who propels out of a giant cannon at more than 55 miles per hour, reaches heights of over 65 feet and travels into a safety net some 165 feet away. He will be front and center Saturday (May 21) and Sunday (May 22) during the Xfinity Series race and NASCAR All-Star Race, respectively, as he will perform in front of the race crowd from the infield scoring pylon.

“Rocketman” Valencia will make his Texas Motor Speedway debut at the conclusion of Stage 2 of Saturday’s SRS Distribution 250 Xfinity Series race and once again following the checkered flag. The SRS Distribution 250 begins at 12:30 p.m. CT (TV: FS1).

The human cannonball returns the next evening for the NASCAR All-Star Race, where he will perform following the conclusion of Rounds 2, 3 and 4. The NASCAR All-Star Race begins at 7 p.m. (TV: FS1) but on-track action officially opens at 5 p.m. with the Open Race for non-qualifiers to earn a berth in the all-star field.

“Rocketman” will have competition for air space from the Great American High Dive Show.

This act features a team of Olympic-caliber, national and world champion divers who will perform dramatic human torch fire dives, thrilling high dives from an 80-foot platform mixed with a patriotic All-American show and costumed clown diving act. The high dive act will be located near Gate 3 of the Fan Zone with two performances Saturday (10:15 & 11:30 a.m.) and three Sunday (12:30, 1:45 & 3 p.m.).

But wait, there’s more.

Country music superstar Blake Shelton will perform a one-hour, pre-race concert beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday prior to the NASCAR All-Star race activities. The concert will take place from the frontstretch stage and free to all in the grandstands.

For those wanting to get more intimate with Shelton on stage, Texas Motor Speedway is offering a limited “Track Pass” for just $99 ($79 for season ticket holders) as an add-on option to a race admission ticket. “Track Pass” holders will move from the grandstands to in front of the stage for the concert, driver introductions and also have pre-race pit access included.

In addition to the high-flying entertainment music, there is a variety of acts for adults and kids alike ranging from full-armor, medieval fighting to acrobatic dogs. The free entertainment is available all three days as soon as the public gates open. The entertainment will be featured primarily near Gates 3 and 7 of the Fan Zone. Click here for a full public schedule of race weekend events.

The entertainment line-up includes:

Armed Forces Bowl Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Armed Forces Bowl Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl to Celebrate its 20th Anniversary in 2022

The Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2022 and will commemorate the milestone throughout the upcoming college football season.

“We are extremely excited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl this year,” said Brant Ringler, executive director of the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl. “This bowl game has enjoyed tremendous growth over the past two decades thanks to the unwavering support of our passionate community and loyal corporate partners. We are proud of all that ‘The Bowl for the Brave’ stands for, and we look forward to continuing to honor our armed forces for decades to come.”

To commemorate the historic year, the bowl will utilize a special 20th anniversary logo that incorporates a roman numeral “XX” into the standard mark. In addition, the bowl will highlight past games, teams and individuals from the first two decades, and will also host special promotions and events surrounding the anniversary game.

Originally named the PlainsCapital Fort Worth Bowl when it debuted in 2003, the “Bowl for the Brave” has featured the armed forces theme since 2006 with patriotic overtones recognizing all six branches of the service – Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy and Space Force – now prevalent throughout the game. Past Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl games have included fan-fest adventure areas showcasing armed forces hardware; flyovers; demonstrations by several of the military’s top skydiving teams; custom homes and vehicles awarded to wounded warriors; on-field induction ceremonies; armed forces bands and honor guards; and the annual Great American Patriot Award presented by Armed Forces Insurance.

Played in honor of the United States Armed Forces, the Armed Forces Bowl was the first collegiate football bowl game to host all three military academy football teams and is the only bowl to have all three academies participate multiple times. With Air Force (2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2015), Army West Point (2010, 2017, 2018, 2021) and Navy (2013, 2016) all having visited Fort Worth, the game has featured an academy team 11 times in the last 15 years.

The bowl game also created the Armed Forces Merit Award, presented annually in conjunction with the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) to an individual and/or a group with a military background that has had an impact within the realm of college football. For additional information about the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl, visit www.ArmedForcesBowl.com and follow on Facebook and Twitter.

The Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl is annually played at TCU’s Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas, and is one of 17 bowl games owned and operated by ESPN Events, a division of ESPN. The date of the 2022 game will be announced later this spring.

ESPN Events, a division of ESPN, owns and operates a portfolio of collegiate sporting events nationwide. In 2022, the 32-event schedule includes three early-season college football kickoff games, 17 college bowl games, 11 college basketball events, and a college softball event, which account for approximately 400 hours of live programming, while reaching nearly 64 million viewers and attracting over 800,000 annual attendees. With satellite offices in more than 10 cities across the country, ESPN Events builds relationships with conferences, schools and local communities, as well as providing unique experiences for teams and fans.

Jessie Montgomery, composer & violinist

Moderated by Buddy Bray

Thursday, November 3, 2022 – 7:30 p.m

Cliburn at the Modern
Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

“Music is my connection to the world. It guides me to understand my place in relation to others and challenges me to make clear the things I do not understand. I imagine that music is a meeting place at which all people can converse about their unique differences and common stories.” – Jessie Montgomery

She’s a decorated composer and violinist whose works are frequently performed around the world by leading musicians and ensembles. Jessie Montgomery was born and raised in Manhattan’s Lower East Side in the 1980s, during a time when the neighborhood was at a major turning point: artists gravitated to this hotbed of artistic experimentation and community development. Her parents—a musician and a theater storyteller—took her to rallies, performances, and parties where neighbors, activists, and artists gathered to celebrate and support the movements of the time. From this sprung Jessie’s unique voice; her music interweaves classical music with elements of vernacular music, improvisation, poetry, and social consciousness. She is an acute interpreter of 21st-century American sound and experience, and she joins us at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth for one night only in a showcase of her music and musicianship, moderated by Buddy Bray.

Friday, November 11, 2022 – 8:00 p.m.

The Post at River East

“Kholodenko exudes a sense of excitement that comes straight out of his personality. Pianist and composer sounded as one, the performance closer to an experience of absolute improvisation than one will ever find in the classical repertoire. He played with such precipitous muscularity and high spirits… [with a] delicate and wistful side to his artistry that was utterly charming.” – New York Classical Review

His Cliburn appearance in 2013 is never to be forgotten; the dynamic and technically phenomenal performances earned Vadym Kholodenko the gold medal and the adoration of fans and critics around the world. He’s since concertized in the major halls and with prestigious orchestras across North America, Europe, and Asia, including being named the first artist-in-partnership of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, where Bass Hall audiences were treated to hearing every Prokofiev concerto in his capable hands. His recordings are also lauded: he’s won a Diapason d’Or de l’année (France’s GRAMMYÒ equivalent) and “Editor’s Choice” from London’s Gramophone magazine. The Kyiv native now returns to Fort Worth—his first Cliburn Concerts appearance in nine years—for two unique concert experiences. See him perform Schubert and Prokofiev in a traditional recital at the Kimbell, or in the casual and intimate confines of The Post. We recommend getting your tickets early.

“Her instrument and talent were striking…. her low notes were great, elemental things, seeming to roll through the auditorium, her high range all sharply milled gunmetal.” – Washington Post

A flashy Cliburn Concerts debut, without a doubt: J’Nai Bridges comes to Fort Worth fresh off a 2022 Grammy win for her recording of Philip Glass’ Akhnaten with the Metropolitan Opera. She’s known for her “plush-voiced mezzo-soprano” (The New York Times) and has been heralded as “a rising star” (Los Angeles Times); she’s graced the world’s top stages in repertoire ranging from traditional favorites to world premieres to spirituals and standards. The American mezzo-soprano sold out her Carnegie Hall solo recital debut. She’s performed at the BBC Proms, Elbphilharmonie, and Tanglewood Festival; with the San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Dutch National Operas; and with the National, BBC, New York Philharmonic, and Chicago Symphony Orchestras, the last with Yo-Yo Ma. And now a handful of lucky Fort Worth patrons will get to hear her excellence in two intimate concerts, one at the Kimbell, one at The Post.

Cliburn at the Modern

“…an unhurried grandeur that has rarely been felt in American music since John Adams came on the scene… more mighty than shy, [Andres] sounds like himself.” – The New Yorker

Timo Andres is an American composer and pianist who was born in California, grew up in rural Connecticut, and now makes his home in Brooklyn. On one night in February, moderated by Buddy Bray, we’ll explore his dual, homegrown talent. As a composer, he’s written works commissioned by such major cultural institutions as the Boston Symphony, Carnegie Hall, and Los Angeles Philharmonic; he was also a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2016. As a pianist, he’s played with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, as well as the North Carolina, New World, and Albany Symphonies, and at Lincoln Center, Wigmore Hall, Phillips Collection, and (le) Poisson Rouge. And when his Carnegie Hall solo recital debut was canceled in April 2020, the artist reconstructed his program as a series of YouTube videos, which were the subject of a feature in The New York Times.

“Astounding technical gifts, the freshness of his imagination, his intense concentration, the absence of any kind of show, and the unmistakable sense of poetic immersion directed solely at the realization of music” – Süddeutsche Zeitung

Benjamin Grosvenor has been heralded as one of the most important pianists to emerge from the United Kingdom in several decades. He’s racked up an impressive display of awards in Europe, from Gramophone, Classic Brit Critics’, UK Critic’s Circle, BBC Young Musician Competition, and Diapason d’Or Jeune. He has been featured on two BBC documentaries and CNN’s Human to Hero series. He is currently completing a season as artist-in-residence at Wigmore Hall, after residencies at both Radio France and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. He’s played with the Chicago, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestras, and at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and Barbican Centre. He was the youngest-ever British musician to sign to the Decca Classics label. He cofounded a local music festival in 2020 to connect people during the pandemic. And in July 2022, he’ll celebrate his 30th birthday. Join us for this stunning Cliburn Concerts debut.

“A worthy winner, with a polish and maturity to his playing that marked him among…the finalists … dashing, extrovert.” – The Guardian

Alim Beisembayev first caught international—and Fort Worth—attention when he took first prize at the inaugural Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition and Festival in 2015, the first Kazakhstan-born pianist to win a Cliburn competition. And our hometown could not have been prouder as we cheered this cherished member of the Cliburn Family on to a gold-medal victory at the Leeds International Piano Competition in 2021, where he also won the audience prize. Since then, this now 24-year-old London-based artist has debuted with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, BBC Symphony Orchestra, SWR Symphonieorchester Stuttgart, and has released his debut album on Warner Classics. He’s played the Wigmore Hall, Southbank Centre, Oxford Piano Festival, and Chopin Institute in Warsaw, in addition to a tour of Europe, in association with the Steinway Prizewinner Concerts Network, and Korea, with the World Culture Network. Now help us welcome him back for this one-night-only Cliburn Concerts debut at the Kimbell.

“Roman’s extraordinary performance combines the expressive control of Casals with the creative individuality and virtuoso flair of Hendrix himself.” – The Guardian

Now a solid Cliburn Concerts favorite, Joshua Roman is a cellist, composer, and curator whose performances embrace musical styles from Bach to Radiohead. Before setting off on his unique path as a soloist, he was the Seattle Symphony’s principal cellist—a job he began at just 22 years of age and left only two years later. He has since become renowned for his genre-bending repertoire and wide-ranging collaborations. Joshua was named a TED Senior Fellow in 2015; his Main Stage TED Talks/Performances garnered millions of views. His endeavors outside the concert hall have taken him to Uganda with his violin-playing siblings, where they played chamber music in schools, HIV/AIDS centers, and displacement camps. He’ll perform two distinctive concerts in April: one traditional recital at the Kimbell, as well as a more casual experience at the Cliburn’s newest club venue, Tulips.

FAMILY FESTIVALS ARE BACK, MARKING THE FIRST MAJOR FAMILY EVENT AT THE KIMBELL IN OVER TWO YEARS

Free exhibition admission, local performances and studio activities offered at the Kimbell April 24 and July 17

The Kimbell Art Museum announces the return of one of its most beloved programs, Family Festivals / Fiestas de las Familias. During festival days, families and art lovers of all ages may enjoy free programming, including performances, art-making activities and gallery explorations that celebrate art and community.

“We are thrilled to resume Family Festivals, which are always a major highlight on our programming calendar. As the Kimbell approaches its 50th anniversary this October, we look forward to showcasing the many different ways that families may explore, create and connect with art in the museum,” says Connie Hatchette Barganier, head of education at the Kimbell.

Two Family Festivals are slated for the coming months—Amazing Art from Across Africa / Arte increíble alrededor de Africa on Sunday, April 24, from noon to 5 p.m., and Summer Art Party with Ice Cream Sunday / Fiesta de verano de arte con helado el domingo on Sunday, July 17, from noon to 5 p.m. Offered in conjunction with the special exhibition The Language of Beauty in African Art, the first Family Festival of 2022 will immerse visitors in vibrant cultural traditions and diverse forms of expression from across Africa with featured performances by Bandan Koro African Drum and Dance and Houston-based storyteller Toni Simmons, art-making activities, gallery explorations and more! Admission to The Language of Beauty in African Art is free for festival participants on April 24.

The April 24 Family Festival will also mark the official reopening of Studio A in the Renzo Piano Pavilion. Studio A, the Kimbell’s sensory-friendly drop-in play space for children (ages 5 and younger) and their adult companions, invites visitors to imagine their own adventure. This “please touch” room encourages families to experience art and community from an early age. Studio A is always free and open during regular museum hours (please note that the Piano Pavilion will be closed August 1–September 17, 2022).

Youth education programs and Studio A are supported by the Lowe Foundation Endowment for Kimbell Kids. Family Festivals / Fiestas de las Familias are supported in part by the Texas Commission for the Arts and by the Nuestro Kimbell committee.
