TBT Revives The Nutcracker for Holiday Season

TBT Revives The Nutcracker for Holiday Season

After a 19-month hiatus, Texas Ballet Theater (TBT) will return to its resident venues to present The Nutcracker at Winspear Opera House on the AT&T Performing Arts Center Campus November 26-December 5 and at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth December 10-26.

Choreographed by TBT Artistic Director Ben Stevenson, O.B.E., the family-friendly ballet features a classic story, festive choreography, and elaborate sets to put patrons in the holiday spirit. The show includes special effects that enhance Clara’s dreamland such as snow, clouds and flying dancers.

The Nutcracker is a holiday tradition for so many families in North Texas,” Executive Director Vanessa Logan said. “We are ecstatic to bring it back to the stage in 2021 and cannot wait to celebrate with our community in person again.”

The Nutcracker will be TBT’s first full-scale production since the emergence of COVID-19 in March 2020. The nonprofit ballet company canceled The Nutcracker performances last year and offered a filmed version for patrons to view at home. Dancers and staff alike anticipate the return of this annual tradition.

“As we prepare for The Nutcracker, I am filled with so many feelings,” Company Dancer Carolyn Judson said. “I know I’ll be battling nerves that have been lying dormant for a while once performances begin, but I am looking forward to performing with new excitement, new love and new gratitude this season.”

Tickets start at $25. Patrons can purchase tickets online at texasballettheater.org or call the Box Office Monday-Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, at 877-828-9200 option 1. AT&T Performing Arts Center, Bass Performance Hall and Texas Ballet Theater all require patrons to wear masks.

Texas Ballet Theater 2021-2022 Season

Texas Ballet Theater 2021-2022 Season

Texas Ballet Theater (TBT) will return to its resident performance venues in the 2021-2022 season, starting with the holiday favorite The Nutcracker.

The nonprofit ballet company will open its season with The Nutcracker, choreographed by TBT Artistic Director Ben Stevenson, O.B.E., at Winspear Opera House in Dallas November 26. The production will run in Dallas through December 5, then move to Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth December 10-26.

For one night only, the company will trade tradition for whimsy in the December 17 performance of The Nutty Nutcracker at Bass Performance Hall. This annual parody features zany characters and pop culture moments woven into the conventional Nutcracker story.

Next, TBT dancers will perform A Tchaikovsky Evening, a mixed repertoire production featuring George Balanchine’s iconic Serenade and two world premieres – Star Crossed by Stevenson and Violin Concerto in D by TBT Associate Artistic Director Tim O’Keefe. A Tchaikovsky Evening will run February 11-13 at the Wyly Theatre in Dallas and February 18-20 at Bass Performance Hall.

The company will close its season with the world premiere of Stevenson’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, running May 6-8 at Winspear Opera House and May 20-22 at Bass Performance Hall. Audiences will finally see the long-awaited premiere, originally scheduled to close the 19-20 season.

“With a return to the stage and three world premieres, this may be Texas Ballet Theater’s most thrilling season yet,” Stevenson said. “Our dancers are looking forward to performing again, and we can’t wait to welcome both familiar and new friends into the audience.”

Patrons can purchase season package subscriptions now by visiting https://texasballettheater.org/season-packages or calling the Box Office at 877-828-9200 option 1. Single tickets go on sale August 2.

Dancers Become Choreographers in Texas Ballet Theater’s Spring Digital Performances

Dancers Become Choreographers in Texas Ballet Theater’s Spring Digital Performances

The nonprofit ballet company invests in the creativity of its Company Dancers by presenting four world premieres.

FORT WORTH, Texas (February 12, 2021) – Texas Ballet Theater (TBT) will digitally present four world premiere ballets this spring, all choreographed by company dancers.

The nonprofit ballet company previously announced a shift to digital programming to replace its originally scheduled in-person mixed repertoire performances. Carl Coomer’s The Story of You and Riley Moyano’s VREC will premiere in March, while Andre Silva’s Bloom and Jiyan Dai’s unnamed ballet will be available in April.

“COVID-19 disrupted our original plans for the spring, as it did for so many other organizations,” Executive Director Vanessa Logan said. “However, that disruption created an incredible opportunity for this group of dancer-choreographers. We look forward to sharing their creativity and innovation with our patrons.”

All four choreographers are creating their pieces specifically for film, straying from the traditional theater experience.

TBT presented Coomer’s Henry VIII and Silva’s 11:11 in previous seasons. This is the first time the company will present works by Jiyan and Moyano.

“It’s amazing how arts organizations have found the positives in such a difficult time,” Artistic Director Ben Stevenson, O.B.E., said. “Through company projects, we recognized choreographic talent in our dancers. These programs are a wonderful way to display that.”

The programs will also be the company’s first opportunity to present new performances since Firebird in February 2020. Since the rise of COVID-19, TBT leadership has cancelled six in-person productions, causing a revenue loss of more than $3.5 million so far. TBT replaced its annual holiday production of The Nutcracker with a filmed version of the ballet from a previous year. The company shared this production with more than 44,000 patrons in homes, schools and hospitals, but without ticket sales for in-person performances, donations to the TBT Relief Fund now drive most of the company’s revenue.

Patrons can enjoy The Story of You and VREC March 18 – April 2, 2021, through the viewing portal on TBT’s website. Bloom and Jiyan’s piece will run April 15-30, 2021.

Tickets for each program are $30 per household and can be purchased by calling the Box Office at 877-828-9200 option 1 or by visiting www.texasballettheater.org. Patrons can also support the TBT Relief Fund on the organization’s website.

TBT Presents The Nutcracker

TBT Presents The Nutcracker

Texas Ballet Theater (TBT) will present a filmed production of Artistic Director Ben Stevenson, O.B.E.’s The Nutcracker online December 14-26, 2020, to keep the holiday spirit alive amid COVID-19.

The nonprofit ballet company cancelled its annual run of the production due to pandemic-related safety restrictions both within the company and at its performance venues in Dallas and Fort Worth. Instead, TBT will offer a full-length film of The Nutcracker that patrons can enjoy directly on the company’s website, www.texasballettheater.org.

“The Nutcracker is part of so many families’ holiday traditions, and this year they can keep that tradition going by watching from the safety and comfort of their homes,” Executive Director Vanessa Logan said. “We are excited to offer this alternative and connect with audiences in our Dallas-Fort Worth community and beyond.”

Digital tickets are $30 and include access to a new, 30-minute version of The Nutty Nutcracker, the company’s popular annual spoof. Traditionally a one-night-only event, patrons can watch The Nutty Nutcracker on TBT’s website as well.

The pandemic also disrupted the company’s annual matinee performances for local elementary school students. This year, TBT will instead offer the filmed performance of The Nutcracker directly to schools and school districts, including Dallas ISD.

Tickets are priced per household and patrons can purchase them through the company’s Box Office, either online or by calling 877-828-9200 option 1.

To learn more or to connect with TBT, visit www.texasballettheater.org or follow the company on social media @txballettheater.
