Book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer

October 19 – November 5, 2023

A co-production with Theatre TCU

By royal decree of the Queen, all princesses must pass a series of tests if they want to marry the hapless Prince. Even worse, throughout the kingdom no one may wed until the Prince finds a worthy wife! Many have tried, all have failed, and the Queen plans to keep it that way. But when a bold and undeniably charming new princess makes a splash at court, it seems the Queen has finally met her match. Music and mischief reign in a tale where happily ever after has never been more ap-PEA-ling.

“As fresh, inventive, and funny as ever…with wit and sophistication, and more important, human feeling” –New York Daily News

Poor Clare

by Chiara Atik

Regional Premiere – Russell Theatre

November 30 – December 17, 2023

Meet Clare – a stylish teen living in medieval Italy, trying out the newest hairstyles, and keeping up with the latest fashions and juicy town gossip. But everything changes when she meets a man named Francis who has started ranting in the streets. Her mother, sister, and maids don’t understand it, but this man’s ideas are, like, totally starting to make sense – and now she can’t unsee the world he has shown her. The surprising story of Saint Clare of Assisi comes to vivid life in this modern parable of generosity, perfect for the holiday season.

“A powerful and very funny modern spin on the medieval story of Saint Clare of Assisi” – The Hollywood Times

That is, until the appearance of Walter, a mysterious and charming young visitor who arrives to help Marjorie uncover the intricacies of her own past. But a secret truth is about to blur the lines between human and machine. In this richly spare, wondrous new play, profound questions emerge about the limits of technology and whether or not memory is an exclusively human invention.

“Elegant, thoughtful and quietly unsettling … keeps developing in your head, like a photographic negative, long after you have seen it” – The New York Times

It’s a total rollercoaster ride as Capitol Hill turns upside down in this riotous comedy. Get ready to laugh your stars and stripes off and root for the powerful women running the free world!

Jammie Holmes: Make the Revolution Irresistible at The Modern

Jammie Holmes: Make the Revolution Irresistible at The Modern

The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth Presents

Jammie Holmes: Make the Revolution Irresistible

On View August 11–November 26, 2023 – FREE Opening Weekend August 11-13!

The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth presents the exhibition Jammie Holmes: Make the Revolution Irresistible, on view August 11 to November 26, 2023. This is the first solo museum exhibition of the artist and is accompanied by a publication with contributions by exhibition curator María Elena Ortiz, Dr. Lauren Cross, Emory Douglas, and the artist.

Holmes creates captivating paintings that show the visual and conceptual significance of the Black figure. Challenging stereotypes, Holmes explores notions of masculinity, mourning, childhood, and race. His works are filled with emotion and painterly gestures; his figures are often depicted in vulnerable situations or simply engaging in moments of contemplation. Rooted in the lived experiences of Black communities in the United States, Holmes is part of a continuum of painters that explore the human figure in current social and political conditions.

Highlighting Southern histories and contemporary realities, the exhibition includes approximately 15 paintings ranging from early to recent works, showcasing the breadth of Holmes’s signature approach toward painting. An early work that references his hometown of Thibodaux, Louisiana, BOX FAN HEROES, 2019, is a vignette of Holmes’s Southern upbringing that garnered national attention. The exhibition features striking paintings and deeply personal works; Blame the Man, 2021, captures a spiritual moment that alludes to how groups form bonds for resistance, while one of Holmes’s most recent works, Lefty, 2023, is a composition honoring veterans and the 1960s civil rights movement. Collectively, these works represent Holmes’s community—the lens through which the artist explores this nation’s history and invokes connections to essential themes of human existence.

Inspired by the culture of his hometown, Jammie Holmes’s figurative and expressive paintings elevate common events in everyday life such as death, grief, faith, and family, into scenes of conviction and compassion. He garnered national attention in 2020 for a public artwork in which he hired planes in Dallas, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York to display banners with the last words of George Floyd, killed by police days before in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

His work has been exhibited at institutions including Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio; Dallas Museum of Art, Texas; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; Nassima Landau Foundation, Tel Aviv, Israel; and National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. His work is included in the collections of Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, East Lansing, Michigan; Brooklyn Museum, New York; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, California; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina; Nassima Landau Foundation, Tel Aviv; Pérez Museum of Art Miami, Florida; and Xiao Museum of Contemporary Art, Rizhao, China.

ABOUT THE MODERN

The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is a leader in collecting, showing, and interpreting art from the 1940s to the present. Situated in the heart of the Cultural District, the creative center of the city, the Modern has been housed since 2002 in an elegant concrete, glass, and steel building designed by the renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando. In addition to 53,000 square feet of soaring, light-filled gallery space and landscaped grounds with outdoor sculptures, the museum features a reflecting pond, theater, education center, gift shop, and café, creating a thriving hub for our community and beyond.

Founded in 1892, the Modern is the oldest museum in Texas; however, our mission has changed over the years. Today, we strive to connect audiences of all ages and backgrounds with the most compelling art and ideas of our time. Showcasing the work of historically significant, mid-career, and emerging artists, the Modern is known for its evolving collection, which is international in scope. The Museum’s holdings include influential artists from Pablo Picasso, Philip Guston, Anselm Kiefer, Martin Puryear, and Agnes Martin to Mark Bradford, Teresita Fernández, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, and Kehinde Wiley. We have a long history of close relationships with the living artists we show and collect, many of whom visit the museum regularly to give talks and lead workshops.

The Modern is a center of lifelong learning and exchange. Our programs include tours, lectures by leading figures in the art world, youth and adult classes, art camps, workshops, and a range of small-group studio and gallery programs led by the Museum’s educators, docents, and community artists. We also present critically acclaimed first-run films and partner with other local arts organizations to offer music, dance, and theater.

Campers will also have an opportunity to swim in the lake, the pool or do water activities/play in the afternoons as we start getting into the heat of the summer on a rotating basis, each week is subject to availability. Day Camp will be offering new opportunities such as laser tag, birthday packages, crew challenges and more!

Traditional: Campers will travel in groups of 1:10 with two groups combined 2:20 to allow for more supervision and give campers an extra set of eyes while in their groups. All campers will be split by age bracket as close as they can be while rotating through different activities, art and more. All camper activities are subject to availability and rotating basis throughout the summer!

Specialty: Campers will focus in on three of the five days specifically on the skill area chosen which allows for a total of 9 class time frames throughout the week while also completing traditional camp activities and following the weekly theme of traditional camp.

Fully Themed: Campers will dawn costumes, make believe and step into fully immersive camps while playing games, art and getting to experience camp activities but in more of an immersive atmosphere through costumes, games and magic. We encourage imagination and look forward to fostering growth and imagination through these camps!

Hip Pocket Theatre 47th Season is Opening Soon!

Hip Pocket Theatre 47th Season is Opening Soon!

Hip Pocket Theatre’s 47th season will open a little earlier than usual to take advantage of [hopefully!] cooler weather, kicking off May 19. The season of six shows runs most weekends through Oct. 29 at its outdoor amphitheatre under the Texas stars, 1950 Silver Creek Dr. in Fort Worth. Performances are Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 9 p.m. for May through August, and 8:15 p.m. for September and October productions. Hip Passes are on sale now through June 11, and may be purchased for either five or 10 performances at the Hip Pocket Box Office. Single tickets also are available.

Hip Pocket’s Regular Season

Riders of the Purple Sage (May 19-June 11)

Johnny Simons and James Maynard adapted Zane Grey’s original story, which was last seen at Hip Pocket in 1996, with two previous productions. Action! Adventure! Romance in the wide open spaces! It’s a classic Western of the silent film era, about Lassiter, an avenging gunslinger in black, Jane Withersteen, a plucky and determined cattle rancher and the dastardly forces that separate them. JoAnn Gracey will direct, with music, lyrics and music direction by Joe Rogers.

El Maleficio De La Mariposa; The Butterfly’s Evil Spell (June 23-July 16)

The play was written by Federico Garcia Lorca, and was last produced at Hip Pocket in 2011. Lorca’s poetic world of beetles, fireflies and other magical creatures is disrupted when a hypnotic, wounded butterfly enters their dewdrop paradise. Boybeetle is cast under the spell of love, and Scorpy is sure to shake things up in this timeless tale of longing and beauty. Yvonne Duque-Guerrero will direct, with music composed and performed live by Darrin Kobetich.

White Elephant (July 28-Aug. 20)

White Elephant was first produced in New York City by La Mama ETC in 2009, receiving two grants from the Jim Henson Foundation, with a reprisal on the Hip Pocket stage with the original New York cast. A reimagining of the original production, it is a meditation on transition, memory and release. The show is presented as a series of poetic vignettes about animals, people and objects that transform from one plane to another. Their stories come to life through puppetry, mask, movement, film and live music. White Elephant was co-written & directed by Lake Simons and John Dyer, with music composed and performed live by Dyer and choreographed and designed by Simons.

Testing Ground 3+3 (Sept. 1-3)

Hip Pocket will return to its roots in experimental theatre by producing a festival of three new works by Rob Bosquez, JoAnn Gracey and Shelby Griffin. Stay tuned for more information.

Old And In The Way (Sept. 15-17)

Once upon a time three friends got the crazy idea of starting their own theatre. They had grown weary working with the restrictions of so called “professional theatre”. So they burned their equity cards and set out to create a place for original work in a rough- hewn, handmade space reflecting their hearts desires. Cash for this adventure began with $300 pulled from their hip pockets. These three were immediately blessed to have many talented folk flock to the fun and freedom of expression. Ticket prices were set at $2.50. This presentation is a nostalgic look back to the early days of a youthful dream, brought to life by the elders of our little tribe wrangled together by Doug Balentine, Diane Simons and Molemo! Molemo! is now one of the last living members of the original tribe and this presentation is meant to be a tender remembrance of the past and a tragi-comedic look at the last days of an old elderly hippy. This play is not for children. (Note: Tickets for this production only are set at $2.50 each!)

The Fly (Oct. 6-29)

James Clavell wrote the screenplay for this special Halloween production, which has been adapted by Shawn Gann. Gann also will direct, with music by Joe Rogers. “Terrifying! Nerve Shattering! Bloodcurdling!” Science played with The Atom and a MONSTER has emerged from the disastrous experiment! Combine your molecules with Hip Pocket Theatre as we use music, practical effects and whimsy to bring you The Fly! “If she looked upon the horror her husband had become… she would scream for the rest of her life!”

Hip Passes for five or 10 admissions are available now. Five-show passes are $85 and 10-show passes are $150 for adults, with reduced prices for seniors, military, teachers, students and children 12 and under. Hip Passes will only be available through June 11, so get your passes now and save money!

Single tickets are now available. Adult tickets are $25 on Fridays and Saturdays and $20 on Sundays, with reduced prices for seniors, military, teachers, students and children 12 and under. Tickets are available online on the Hip Pocket website. Performances are at 9 p.m. May through August and at 8:15 p.m. September and October. There is no late seating.

The Hip Café in The BackYard opens at 7 p.m. and offers beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks for purchase before and after the show and during intermission for shows performed with two acts. No outside food or beverages are permitted. Live music will be performed in The BackYard before and after the shows, starting at 7:45 p.m. May through August, and at 7 p.m. September and October.

Special Events

In addition to the season of musicals and plays produced by Hip Pocket, two additional offerings are planned. These do not fall within Hip Pocket’s regular season and are not covered with a Hip Pass.

Theatre/Movement Workshop

ROUGH MAGIC: LIVE WIRE with Lorca Simons (May 20-21)

This dynamic ritual theatre lab will be produced by Ecstatic Dance Dallas. The workshop will be held at Hip Pocket Theatre during the day on May 20 and 21. In response to Gabrielle Roth’s investigation into what it means to be an authentic human being, Lorca Simons is dedicated to the creation of physical theatre that is both interactive and transformative. Offering labs rooted in a visionary and rigorous technique for people to become true “athletes of the heart,” Live Wire ritual theatre expands the imagination through curiosity, breath, physical gesture and space. Performance art in the raw, rooted in the real. Registration and more information are available at Ecstatic Dance Dallas.

Special One-Night Only Performance

A Night of Grief & Mystery, World Tour (July 12 at Hip Pocket Theatre)

Stephen Jenkinson and Gregory Hoskins

A Night of Grief & Mystery combines stories and observations by author/culture activist Stephen Jenkinson, drawn from his decades of work in palliative care, with original songs/sonics by recording artist Gregory Hoskins. These two Canadian artists have been exploring the intersection of their work for eight years, across three continents, in three recordings and two short films. They come to the road now in 2023 as they did in the beginning: the two of them, a singer and a storyteller, out into the mystery days. Tickets and more information are available on the Nights of Grief & Mystery website.
