Out of 41 artists, 6 were chosen to receive $5,000 grants. These finalists will showcase their own original songs they submitted for Sounds of Resilience as well as perform with their fellow finalists live on stage. Ring in the new year with an evening of Americana hits and holiday tunes featuring REK’s famous Bluegrass flare.

DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD LIVE! (April 5, 2022, at Bass Hall) “Won’t you ride along with me?” Following the hugely successful “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Live: King for a Day” tour that traveled to more than 50 neighborhoods in 2019, Daniel Tiger and all his friends from the beloved Emmy Award®-winning PBS KIDS television series are hopping back aboard Trolley for Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Live.

In Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Live, Daniel Tiger and his family along with O the Owl, Miss Elaina, Katerina Kittycat, Prince Wednesday, and more familiar friends will take audiences on an interactive adventure to the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, sharing stories of friendship, helping others and celebrating new experiences. The live show features new songs and fan-favorites series, including the beloved “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” The live theatrical production is filled with music, dancing, and wonderful surprises that will warm the hearts of preschoolers, parents, and grandparents alike.

THE BRITISH INVASION – LIVE ON STAGE (May 4, 2022, at Bass Hall) On Sunday, February 9, 1964, close to 50 percent of U.S. television viewers tuned in to the number one variety show of the era, The Ed Sullivan Show, to see the American debut of a British group called The Beatles. This was the beginning of a cultural phenomenon known as the British invasion. On May 4 at Bass Performance Hall, audiences will experience The British Invasion – Live on Stage an all-new live theatrical and concert event that showcases the most popular music from that era. Featuring songs from The Rolling Stones, Dave Clark 5, The Animals, The Kinks and Dusty Springfield, this immersive multimedia show will place the audience front and center of pop culture history.

From the producers of The Simon and Garfunkel Story, The British Invasion – Live on Stage will showcase the music and how it impacted art, fashion, literature, changing the very essence of pop culture and redirecting history. Featuring an all-live band with huge projection period photos along with original film footage, the show will focus on British music that dominated the charts and the airwaves with bands such as Manfred Mann, The Searchers, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Zombies, Freddie & The Dreamers, and Herman’s Hermits along with dozens more.

Jubilee Theatre Helps Welcome Audiences Back to Bass Hall

Jubilee Theatre Helps Welcome Audiences Back to Bass Hall

THE “SOUTHERN BOYS” TRAIN IS COMING THROUGH NORTH TEXAS – GET ON BOARD!

Soul-stirring Kathy D. Harrison musical to play Fort Worth’s Bass Performance Hall by way of Jubilee Theatre July 29 – August 15

FORT WORTH, Texas (June 18, 2021) – You might be able to stop the dreamers, but no one can stop the dream; even in the deep trenches of the Mississippi Delta.

Jubilee Theatre, in partnership with Performing Arts Fort Worth, proudly presents Southern Boys: Sons of Sharecroppers, the highly acclaimed musical stage production, written by Kathy D. Harrison, directed by D. Wambui Richardson, with musical direction by Steven A. Taylor. It comes to Bass Performance Hall for live in-person performances July 29-August 15 with streaming shows continuing through August 29 at www.jubileetheatre.org.

Harrison’s musical brings to life the beginning of America’s historic post-slavery era through the eyes of emancipated slaves and their free children, with all its jubilant excitement as well as its debilitating realities.

President Lincoln has signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The North has won the Civil War. Reconstruction has begun. Those freed are making their transition from slavery to freedom, ready to fulfill their new dreams and “make something of themselves.” Their first opportunities come — ironically — as sharecroppers on the very plantation where they were enslaved.

The brutal and demeaning conditions of sharecropping takes its toll on their aspirations to realize REAL freedom. Is going from slavery to sharecropping like going from the frying pan into the fire?

Hopes and dreams start to dissipate – except for 17-year-old Johnny. In spite of the increasing disillusionment felt by everyone around him, he dares to keep on dreaming. He hears the loud horn of a train approaching near the fields – heading north. Will he catch that train and jump on into a new, unknown world? If so, who, if anyone, will follow?

Southern Boys: Sons of Sharecroppers was nominated for Best Musical at the 2020 New York Theatre Festival. The production also received rave reviews at the North Carolina Black Repertory Company.

“What a tremendous culmination to a 40th Anniversary Season in pandemic mode,” said Christie M. Howard, Jubilee Theatre’s Managing Director. “Jubilee Theatre is elated to have the opportunity to perform our work on the Bass Hall stage. Sharing a story about perceived victory, surprising challenges, and unyielding perseverance is more than timely as these are the themes that are resonant in the very spirit of Fort Worth’s rich performing arts community.”

“We are thrilled to partner with Jubilee Theatre to present Southern Boys at Bass Performance Hall,” said Performing Arts Fort Worth President & CEO Dione Kennedy. “This is a collaboration that we’ve been talking about for several months and we’re excited to see it come to life this summer,” Kennedy added. “Our teams are working together on the production’s technical aspects, as well as marketing and communications, front of house operations and ticketing. This also marks the return of welcoming audiences back into Bass Hall and we’re delighted to join forces with Jubilee Theatre to signify the official reopening of Bass Hall.”

“THE STAGE IS NO LONGER DARK!” said Howard. “A heartfelt thank you goes to Dione and her staff for seeing value in showcasing diverse perspectives through various mediums of artistic expression.”

Jubilee Theatre also gives special thanks to the Ann L. & Carol Green Rhodes Charitable Trust to serve as Headline Sponsor for Southern Boys North Texas appearance.

Preview Week for Southern Boys at Bass Hall runs from July 29-August 5. Opening Night is set for August 6, followed by two shows (3pm and 8pm) on August 7 and a Sunday matinee (3pm) on August 8.

Additional performances will take place at Bass Hall from August 12-15 (two shows on August 14). Streaming will be available August 16-29 at www.jubileetheatre.org.

Dominic Hunter plays Johnny, the one sharecropper with the audacity to maintain that one sliver of hope for total freedom still inside him. His friends, Titus and Malachi are played by Dameron Grove and Nigel Smith, respectively.

Ron Johnson plays Moe, while La Paige Bedford plays Delilah. The rest of the cast include Davian Jackson as Otis, Kevin Davis, Jr. as Sam, Kris Black Jasper as Honey and Sydney Hewitt as Sister.

Southern Boys is written by multi-disciplined performer and playwright Kathy D. Harrison, a Company Member of The Paper Bag Players, where she has performed seasons of comedic shows for young audiences through the Mid-Atlantic Region since 2004.

D. Wambui Richardson, a native of New Orleans, has over 20 years of directing experience. He’s also the artistic director at Jubilee Theatre.

Independent music director and composer Steven A. Taylor masterfully provides vivid effects to the songs and sounds of Southern Boys.

Bass Performance Hall, owned and operated by Performing Arts Fort Worth, is located at 525 Commerce St. in the heart of Sundance Square in downtown Fort Worth.

Southern Boys: Sons of Sharecroppers will be the final production of Jubilee Theatre’s historic 40th season. Jubilee Theatre will soon announce the lineup for its 41st season, beginning in September.

Tickets are now on sale for Southern Boys: Sons of Sharecroppers. For ticket information, visit www.basshall.com or www.jubileetheatre.org.

Enhanced health and safety protocols will be in place at Bass Hall, including the requirement of masks/face coverings. To learn more, visit www.basshall.com/reopeningplans

Music, Memory and More with the Fort Worth Opera

Music, Memory and More with the Fort Worth Opera

This innovative new program is funded in part by a generous grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts, in partnership with Dementia Friendly Fort Worth and the United Way Area Agency on Aging in Texas.

Fort Worth Opera (FWO) announced today the launch of Music, Memory, and More, a seven-week series (March 30, April 8, 22, May 13, 27, and June 10, 15 at 10:30 am CST). This series features guest artists from Fort Worth Opera, along with the company’s talented Lesley Resident Artists. Each hour-long event begins with a mini-concert. During the first event on Tuesday, March 30, this therapeutic program will consist of two 20-minute segments. The first half of every session will feature musical performances followed by an interactive activity. Each activity is specifically designed to engage individuals living with dementia in the DFW area. In addition to the March 30 event, the series will be offered twice monthly through April, May, and June. Supported in part by a special grant from the Texas Commission of the Arts, this inspiring new series is an extension of Fort Worth Opera’s special community programming and marks the inaugural collaboration between FWO, Dementia Friendly Fort Worth, and the United Way Area Agency on Aging in Texas.

The connection between music and memory has been the ongoing subject of international research for many decades. A recent clinical study published in The Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease found that musical stimuli delayed cognitive decline and showed improvement in brain network synchronization within individuals suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s.¹ Musical aptitude and appreciation are two of the final remaining cognitive abilities in the minds of dementia patients, and musical memory appears to endure long after the mind has begun to deteriorate. With more than 100 types of incurable dementia in existence, Fort Worth Opera hopes this series will provide another impactful way to move beyond the stigma of the disease, share our passion for music, and connect with members of our community.

Music, Memory, and More will feature FWO Manager of Education and Community Engagement, Sheran Goodspeed Keyton, and a guest presenter who will guide participants through fun and engaging activities, including music, movement, music therapy, call and response interaction, and socialization. Having a routine is beneficial for individuals living with dementia, so FWO has chosen to offer this program twice a month through June of this year. Within these recorded sessions, there will be opportunities to discuss the art form of opera, learn more about the six historical periods of classical music and the different voice types. There will also be many moments throughout this series where participants can sing along. For those who cannot join us, each recording will be available to watch online through Worth Opera and Dementia Friendly Fort Worth’s YouTube channels for thirty days following each session.

To attend, please contact Gail Snider at gsnider@dementiafriendlyfw.org and 817-994-3803.

About Fort Worth Opera: Founded in 1946, Fort Worth Opera is poised to celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2021. For the last fifteen years, FWO has become one of the leading American companies dedicated to nurturing and performing new opera, in addition to producing traditional repertoire with rising American stars. Our acclaimed Frontiersprogram was held online this fall with our first digital Libretto Workshop. The company’s Children’s Opera Theatre typically reaches about 60,000 students across North Texas each season with live, interactive performances.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, FWO has created online educational curriculum for local music students to supplement their in-school studies, and COT can also now serve entire families and communities beyond the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Fort Worth Opera is committed to celebrating all North Texans, and through our ongoing Noches de Ópera program, the company offers exciting community-driven events and powerful operas that represent the diverse cultures of all of the Americas.

DEMENTIA FRIENDLY FORT WORTH: Dementia Friendly Fort Worth collaborates with community partners to advocate for systems change and provide education, resources, and services that will enhance the lives of those with dementia and their care partners.
