Santa is coming to town!

Santa is coming to town!

Jubilee Theatre – prestigiously known as Fort Worth’s premiere Black theatre – is living up to its mission of sharing stories that give a glimpse of the African American diaspora. As such, we also believe all ethnicities are vital to our microcosm that makes up Tarrant County. Thus, the creation of “Santa On The Square. “

With the support of Sundance Square, and other community sponsors, Jubilee Theatre is presenting multi-ethnic Santas for children to visit from December 3-23, 2022 (11 a.m. to 8 p.m.). Santa and his sleigh will be at the covered patio located outside the former Bird Café in Sundance Plaza. Rotating SANTA time slots will feature traditional Santa/Kris Kringle, Black Santa and Latino Santa for families to select for their visit.  FREE photo texts will be provided and/or a photo print can be purchased via CREDIT/DEBIT Card for $15.

Jubilee’s Theatre’s website and posters around the Plaza will utilize a QR code for both viewing the multi-ethnic Santa schedules and to RSVP a Santa visit appointment.  Also, parking is free in Sundance Square Garages #3 and #4 with special SANTA parking vouchers given after the photo sessions.

“We are excited about the upcoming opportunities to expand our presence in the Sundance Square community,” states Christie Howard, Managing Director of Jubilee Theatre. “Increased accessibility to cultural arts is the cornerstone of the rich Sundance Square experience. We invite all to join us.”

“Santa on the Square” is but one component of the holiday celebrations at Jubilee Theatre.  We are also showing the production of Take the Soul Train to Christmas (Nov 25 to Dec 23). A holiday musical for the whole family. For more information, visit https://www.jubileetheatre.org

THE PRICE OF PERFECTION

Stage West presents Rajiv Joseph’s Guards at the Taj

What kinds of sacrifices can be demanded in the pursuit of beauty and perfection?  Do friendship, health, even life, rank as acceptable losses?  This question is at the center of Rajiv Joseph’s funny and deeply moving Guards at the Taj, winner of both Obie and Lucille Lortel Awards in 2015, which begins Stage West’s 44th season with a 5-week regional premiere run Thursday, October 20.

Humayan and Babur are two lowly Imperial guards, keeping watch over the walls around the newly completed Taj Mahal on the last night before it is revealed to the public in all its glory. Despite their differences (Humayan is a believer in discipline and rule-following, while Babur is a dreamer who questions pretty much everything), these two have forged a deep friendship, and they banter to pass the time. Unfortunately, they eventually come to the realization that, due to their lowly status, they will be responsible for carrying out a horrific task decreed by the Emperor. Come morning, they have no choice but to comply, and so they do, but it changes them irrevocably.  Can their friendship survive? Can they?  And is a creation of such astounding beauty worth such a terrible price?

This haunting play is sure to stay with audiences long after the curtain comes down.

A piercing examination of the nature of beauty, its relationship to power, and its unspeakable costs.” – Chicago Reader

Texas Ballet Theatre Announces 2022-2023 Season

Texas Ballet Theatre Announces 2022-2023 Season

Texas Ballet Theater (TBT) announces its 2022-2023 season, including an additional production, a world premiere and classic favorites.

The nonprofit ballet company will open the season with Cirque du Ballet, a world premiere production featuring an array of characters and choreography from the world’s most popular ballets. TBT Artistic Director Ben Stevenson, O.B.E. will choreograph the production, running at Winspear Opera House in Dallas September 16-18, 2022, and at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth September 30-October 2, 2022.

The season will continue with the annual production of The Nutcracker, also choreographed by Stevenson. The holiday favorite will run at Winspear Opera House November 25-December 4, 2022, before moving to Bass Performance Hall December 9-24, 2022.

For one night only, TBT will present The Nutty Nutcracker, a pop culture-filled parody of the traditional ballet, at Bass Performance Hall December 16, 2022.

Next, the company will perform Modern Masterpieces, a mixed repertoire production featuring Stevenson’s Bartok and Image as well as choreographer Garrett Smith’s Imbue. Modern Masterpieces will run at Wyly Theatre in Dallas February 24-26, 2023, and Bass Performance Hall March 17-19, 2023.

TBT closes the season with the return of Stevenson’s Alice in Wonderland. This ballet follows the classic children’s story and includes a unique element – select dialogue and narration by characters, typically unseen in ballet. Alice in Wonderland will be on stage at Winspear Opera House May 19-21, 2023, and Bass Performance Hall May 26-28, 2023.

“The season truly has something for everyone,” Stevenson said. “It is full of fantasy and engaging stories, presented by our talented company of dancers. The whole family can come and enjoy the ballet all season long.

Church and State
at Stage West

KEEPING THE FAITH

Stage West presents Jason Odell Williams’ fast-paced dramedy Church & State.

A political candidate sharing his raw feelings about a hot button issue with the voting public during a campaign rally: what could possibly go wrong? It’s risky business, in Jason Odell Willliams’ timely political comedy-with-a-twist Church & State, which begins a 4-week regional premiere run on Thursday, January 27 in the Jerry Russell Theatre at Stage West.

North Carolina Senator Charles Whitmore has a problem. Even though he’s a well-liked guy with solid bipartisan appeal, his re-election is not looking like a slam-dunk.  And then, his off-the-cuff remark after a funeral for two school shooting victims goes viral. Now it’s damage control time.  Both his New York liberal campaign manager and his charming conservative wife are in agreement—he should walk back his remark.  But Whitmore wants to be true to himself, come what may.  What to do?

Whitmore’s decision leads to a surprising result, and there’s more than one twist to come.  Jason Odell Williams has crafted a deft mixture of comedy and drama, with characters who are both comic and utterly human.  This play is sure to make audiences laugh…and think.

“Excellent…both human and humane, keeps you guessing” – Chicago Tribune

Jason Odell Williams is an Emmy-nominated writer and producer as well as an award-winning playwright and novelist. Hailed as a “postmodern Clifford Odets” by the L.A. Times and “this country’s newest Eugene O’Neill” by the Santa Monica Daily Press, his play Church & State was nominated for Best New Play by the Off-Broadway Alliance and L.A. Ovation Awards. Church & State was selected to be an NNPN Rolling World Premiere with productions in Los Angeles and Rochester before running for over 100 performances Off-Broadway at New World Stages. Jason’s first play Handle With Care was a New York Times Critics’ Pick, ran for over 100 performances Off-Broadway starring Carol Lawrence, has been produced over twenty times since 2011 in the U.S. and Canada, and won three Theatre Bay Area Awards including Outstanding Production. Other plays include Baltimore in Black & White (the cell theatre), Someone Else (NC Stage), The Science of Guilt (DR2), Going Offline (Fells Point Corner Theatre), The Jungle Gym (American Globe Theatre). Jason was a winner of the 2012 Hudson Valley Writers’ Center contest and the winner of the 2011 Fixitsolife Theatre playwriting contest. He lives in New York City with wife and daughter. More at http://jasonodellwilliams.com/

Church & State will be directed by Jenna Burnett.  The cast features Ashley Wood, last at Stage West as Dr. Evans in Holmes and Watson, as Charlie, with Shannon J. McGrann, who appeared as Nora in Stage West’s A Doll’s House Part 2, as wife Sara. Ryan Michael Friedman, last at Stage West as Love in Everybody, will appear as Tom, Marshall, Reporter, and Security Guy.  And making her Stage West debut is Madeline Dockery-Furhmann, seen as Emilia in Winter’s Tale at Shakespeare in the Bar, as Alex.

Set design is by Natalie Rose Mabry, with lighting design by Jared Land, costume design by Amanda Capshaw, sound design by Jake Nice, projection design by Philip Vilar, and props and set décor by Lynn Lovett.

Church & State will preview Thursday, January 27 at 7:30 and Friday, January 28 at 8:00, and will run through Sunday, February 20.  All Sunday matinees will be Safe Sundays, with proof of vaccination required. Masks are required for all performances. Performance times will be Thursday evenings at 7:30, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00, with Sunday matinees at 3:00.  Ticket prices for the season are $40 on Thursdays and Fridays, and $45 on Saturdays and Sundays, with $20 tickets for the two preview performances.  Food service is available 90 minutes prior to performances (reservations are advised).  Reservations and information are available through the Box Office (817-784-9378), or on the website, www.stagewest.org.
